Influence of Qualification and Teachers Experience on the Performance of Senior School Physics Students in Ilorin, Kwara State.

Abstract

This study examined the influence of teachers' qualifications and teaching experience on the performance of Senior School Physics Students in Ilorin, Kwara State. The study was a Ex -post factor design. The population for this study covered all the physics teachers in private and public secondary schools offering physics in Ilorin, thirty (30) schools were selected using stratified random sampling techniques out of the one hundred and fifty-five (155) public and private secondary schools in Ilorin. Fifty (50) physics teachers and three hundred and forty-three (343) physics students were involved in the study. The researcher designed a questionnaire titled "Physics Teacher Questionnaire (PTQ)" for teachers which deals with qualification and years of teaching experience, and "Physics Performance Test (PPT) " for Students which was adopted from WAEC Questions. Answers were sought for the two research questions asked and the two hypotheses were tested using frequency counts, simple percentage and Chi-square statistics. In order to ensure the reliability of the instrument, a test-retest method was used. The reliability co-efficient was 0.785 with aid of Pearson correlation co-efficient. The findings showed that, 228 students out of343 were taught with qualified Physics teachers, 172 were taught with Experience Physics teachers. The findings indicated that, there was no significant difference in the academic^ performance of students taught by qualified and less qualified physics teachers but there was significant difference in the academic Performance of Students' taught by experienced and less experienced Physics teachers. Based on these findings recommendation was made.
