Abstract: We present the development of real-time and low-cost biosensors based on planar photonic bandgap (PBG) structures where their readout is done by means of a novel power-based readout technique where tunable lasers or spectrometers are avoided. This fact allows not only the reduction of the cost, size and weight of the final readout system, but it also opens the door to the full integration of light sources and detectors within the same chip.
