dc.description.abstract | The paper examined the profitability of maize-based farmers by determining the cost and returns in maize-based farming in Niger State, Nigeria. Data collection involved the use of primary data through the use of structured questionnaire. A multi-stage random sampling technique was used in selecting the respondents for the study and a total of 133 farming households engaging in maize-based crop production were used. Data were analyzed using budgetary analysis to determine the profit levels of the farmers, multiple regression analysis were used to determine the factors affecting maize yield of the farmers while elasticity of production and return to scale were used to determine the economics of scale. The results of the costs and returns analysis revealed that the net income/Ha was ₦86,687.47 and ₦178,784.65 for sole cropping and mixed cropping systems, respectively. Some of the constraints identified were inadequate extension and farm advisory services and pilfering/theft. Government should organize adult education to educate the farmers on how to effectively utilize the resources at their disposal. | en_US |
