Hepatotoxicity in cancer patients can often result from administered chemotherapeutic drugs which cause the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) required for cytotoxic action on tumor cells. The present study investigated the biochemical effect of ethylacetate fraction of Lannea barteri stem bark (ELBSB) in cisplatin induced oxidative stress in wistar rats. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of ELBSB were carried out using standard procedures. Animals were weighed, and randomly divided into 6 groups of 4 rats. The rats were administered cisplatin intraperitoneally at a single dose of 7mg/kg body weight for 7 days and then treat with ELBSB at doses of (200, 400)mg/kg and silymarin (100)mg/kg body weight from day 8 to day 21. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) enzyme activities and total bilirubin (TBIL) were measured in the serum, while catalase (CAT), Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH) activities were measured in the liver homogenate. The qualitative result showed that the ELBSB contains phenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, and steroids. The quantitative result showed that phenol was present in (135.38±0.73)mg/100g while flavonoid was (1.51±0.37)mg/g. The biochemical analysis showed that the treated groups had a significantly (p<0.005) reduced ALT, AST, ALP enzymes and TBIL activities in the serum while CAT, SOD and GSH activities were increased compared to the negative control groups. This observed remedial effect of ELBSB in cisplatin induced hepatic damage may be attributed to the antioxidant potential of the plant in reducing the oxidative damage caused by cisplatin.en_US
